Brothers Grimm Fairytales, The Uncut Version

In several posts we have discussed whether or not fairytales avoided being dark. The Grimm Brothers fairytales have been adapted over the years to be more genteel. Some of the “lightening up” of the fairytales was done by the Grimms – Jacob and Wilhelm – themselves; to uphold the motherhood as sacred, and to appeal to the largely religious middle class.

Jack Zipes, professor emeritus of German and comparative literature at the University of Minnesota has published his version of the original 156 Brothers Grimm fairytales. Zipes’ book reveals a frightening side to the tales we grew up reading.
