In Review: 1999 Caldecott Winner Mary Azarian

Mary Azarian has gone full circle in her love and workmanship with using wood blocking as her artistic medium of choice.

After three years of teaching in one of the last one-room schools in Vermont, I decided to see if it would be possible to earn a living selling woodcut prints. I began producing prints in black and white, printing each block by hand. Eventually I began adding color by hand-painting each black and white print, a non-traditional approach, to say the least.

Azarian is a successful and well-published author who is best known for her Caldecott winning book, Snowflake Bentley. However, like all great artists, she continues to stretch, grow and expand her strengths. Read more on Mary Azarian’s blog!
