Kid Lit Pride: Celebrating LGBT StoryMakers

by Kassia Graham

Representing diverse voices has always been a part of KidLit TV’s mission. In celebration of Pride Month we’re highlighting two of our StoryMakers who’ve made strides to share stories championing LGBT characters in kid lit. Their stories inspire and give hope to children so they know it does get better.

Tim Federle
Tim Federle’s Five, Six, Seven, Nate! featured the first boy-on-boy kiss in middle grade fiction. In 2015 the book won a Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBT YA/Children’s book. Federle will be writing short stories for the Middle Grade We Need Diverse Books Random House anthology.

Chris Shirley
Chris Shirley’s YA novel Playing by the Book is the first coming out novel to win a IPPY Award for Religious Fiction. Playing by the Book is the story of a preacher’s son who finds his true self while studying in New York City over the summer. In addition to being an author, Shirley is on the board of Lambda Literary.
