Field Trip! | Bank Street College of Education

After KidLit TV live streamed the Irma Black Award and Cook Prize ceremony, professor and intrepid reporter Susannah Richards, PhD interviewed several of the accomplished kid lit creators in attendance. Find out which past Irma Black Award winner’s next book will focus on demystifying fractals, how Mac Barnett makes a ghost appear out of thin air, and how John Rocco’s daughter inspired him to write Blizzard.

Irma Black wrote and edited children’s books. She was a longtime member of the Bank Street Writers Laboratory. The Irma S. and James H. Black Award for Excellence in Children’s Literature is awarded to an exceptional book whose text and illustration augment each other in such a manner that they create an unforgettable whole.

The Cook Prize is named in honor of Don Cook of the Bank Street Graduate School of Education and Michael Cook (no relation) of the Bank Street School for Children. The Cook Prize is awarded to an outstanding picture book focused on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for those aged eight to ten.

The Irma Black Award and Cook Prize are unique because children are the ultimate judges of the winning books.
