Podcast Ep 24 | Earl Wiman from the NEA
Every week, day and hour should celebrate Teachers Appreciation Week. Teachers should be appreciated for their hard work, compassion and dedication to making children life-long learners. And who better to celebrate with than Earl Wiman from the National Education Association Executive Committee! Earl has been one of the many dedicated committee members who has helped shape NEA’s signature initiative around “Leading the Professions”.
On this episode of KidLit Podcast, KidLit TV’s founder, Julie Gribble, interviews Earl about the advancement of school curriculum, why and how parents and teachers should read to children every day, the NEA’s Read Across America campaign, the importance behind teachers and a child’s journey to life-long education and so much more.
“The other part about the NEA is that we really believe that every student in America should have access to a great public school.” – Earl Wiman
NEA has partnered with many national organizations and has a grant fund called Great Public Schools where teachers, local associations of teachers and ESP members can apply for funding for the innovation around curriculum and finding new ways to assess students, rather than using multiple choice tests. The most popular part of this is Read Across America.
“If we want children to read we have to give them time to read and access to good literature.” – Earl Wiman
Reading motivation and awareness is what NEA’s Read Across America celebrates annually. This campaign calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. Read Across America also provides NEA members, parents, caregivers, and children with many fun and educational resources and activities to keep reading on the calendar 365 days a year.

What a wonderful interview, Julie! I love that Earl Wiman ate 3 worms as a challenge to get kids to read 10,000 books.
