BookFest is an event devoted to the celebration, discovery, and discussion of books for children and teens. This event, designed for adults, features luminaries from the children’s literature community. Authors, illustrators, editors, reviewers, and scholars will take part in panel discussions and breakout sessions.
BookFest was founded in 1971, by Frances Henne, a faculty member of the School of Library Service at Columbia University. The event was originally known as Let’s Talk About Books for Children and Youth Day, or Velma Varner Day, in honor of Henne’s close friend and colleague, Velma Varner, editor of Viking Press. The event has been hosted by Columbia University, Teachers College, and the New York Public Library. Bank Street College of Education has been a proud producer of this wonderful event since 2010.
Registration will open on Thursday, September 1, 2016.

About the Center for Children’s Literature
Learning to read gives a child a tool for acquiring information. Loving to read equips a child with an essential set of skills for developing a rich, imaginative and ever-expanding life.
Our mission is to create, identify, and advocate for the highest quality literature for all children from infancy through adolescence. We ensure that such literature is readily accessible to every child, and to foster in parents, educators, and policy makers a commitment to the principle that good literature is fundamental to literacy.
The Center will provide workshops, guides and content for learning and social-emotional/ aesthetic development at all levels of childhood education.
The faculty of Bank Street College of Education seeks to address a growing challenge: the diminishing use of children’s literature in literacy programs, particularly in the early grades. As a result, many children are finding it much more difficult to “engage” in their own learning.
The components of the Center are the Children’s Book Committee, Irma Simonton and James H. Black Award, The Cook Prize, BookFest@ Bank Street, and the Writers Lab. The Center is housed in the Bank Street College Library, home to a circulating collection of more than 68,000 children’s books.
I’m a retired first grade teacher and taught at an amazing time! We used beautiful literature in all subject areas! Our classrooms were flooded with literature! Children were reading and writing all day and loving it!! I was able to incorporate Lucy Caulkins and Debbie Miller into my teaching!
Children learned to read and write but more importantly, the loved reading and writing! I think it made learning come alive!!!! There is nothing like a beautiful book????????????????????
HI Kathy! I hope you join us — the line up phenomenal!
