Read Out Loud: NO KIMCHI FOR ME!

Read along with author and illustrator  Aram Kim on this episode of Read Out Loud on Governors Island! In this picture book, follow Yoomi as she tries to find a way to eat kimchi! But will she find a way to eat the food that she dislikes so much? Read along to find out, and discover a secret kimchi pancake recipe!

We taped this episode of Read Out Loud on location during the KidLit TV Children’s Book Weekend on Governors Island at a house built in the late 1800s! The military installation on Governors Island was known collectively as Fort Columbus, and in 1878, officers’ families started to move in, and resources, such as a movie theater, a YMCA, “officer’s club,” public school, and three chapels, were built. This house is located next to the Admirals House in Nolan Park.

ABOUT THE BOOK

NO KIMCHI FOR ME!
Yoomi hates stinky, spicy kimchi—the pickled cabbage condiment served at Korean meals. So her brothers call her a baby and refuse to play with her. Yoomi is determined to eat kimchi. She tries to disguise it by eating it on a cookie, on pizza, and in ice cream. But that doesn’t work. Then Grandma shows Yoomi how to make kimchi pancakes. This story about family, food, and a six-year-old “coming of age” has universal themes, and at the same time celebrates Korean culture. A kimchi pancake recipe and other back matter are included.

Kudos on a wonderful program of author-illustrator, Aram Kim, reading No Kimchi For Me! She not only shares her terrific story, but gives a brief geography and cooking lesson along the way. She’s as fun and charming as her book–a universal coming of age story with a fresh Korean twist.

I enjoyed this book because it shows that you don’t have to prove yourself but you can always help out and be what you are no matter what people say about you I am a only child but I think that my parents would really enjoy this book. Thank you for reading it.
