Diverse Summer Reading Booklists and Recommendations

As school wraps up in many parts of the world, (and starts up in others!) one thing is on many adult’s minds: keeping the kids reading!

Though we don’t want to deprive our kids of the relaxation and exploration of the summer months, adults also need to be mindful to keep little brains learning and off of devices as much as possible.

Enter, the Summer Reading Project! Here are some book lists and recommendations on multicultural books that will pique young minds and encourage adventure without needing to leave the own zip code.

Diverse Summer Reading Booklists and Recommendations

It’s no secret that the middle-grade group tends to be the most reluctant to read during the summer months. The key is to pick books and topics that nudge their curiosity. Erica from What Do We Do All Day has a great chapter book booklist for 7-10-year-olds.

As the mother of TWO “differently-wired kids,” I can promise you that books that help kids feel like they are not alone are a plus in many ways. From topics like dyslexia and autism to SPD and ADHD, Melissa from Imagination Soup hit a home rum with her round-up of Best Children’s Books With Characters Who Have Learning Differences.

P.S. Did you know that Rick Riordan wrote the Percy Jackson series for his son who, like Percy, has ADHD and dyslexia?? So cool!

Some of the best ways to interest reluctant readers, and get them moving, is to pick books that can do “double-duty.” Leanna from All Done Monkey has a wonderful diverse booklist that will have kids tapping their toes and dancing around the house in no time! Check out her list of Unique Books for Kids: Musical Picture Books.

Speaking of music, diversity, and movement, be sure and check out Ajanta on the Culture Groove YouTube channel!

Not only does she educate people worldwide with her high-energy dance videos, but this ambitious mom also uses this movement and diversity channel to share CultureGroove Books with the world.

Maya & Neel’s India Adventure Series by Ajanta & Vivek takes kids on a journey across India as they experience festivals, cities, food, music, dance, and everything else that makes the Indian culture so vibrant and joyful!

The series has 8 titles so far including festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Ramadan/Eid, etc. regions such as Mumbai, Delhi, and even one on Indian wedding! The books provide an in-depth view via fun and engaging content! Learn more here.

Keep Calm and Read On!
