Diverse Kidlit for Kids Who Love a Good Series

Can you believe July is almost over? I’m guessing that many adults and kids are having the same, “Wait. What?!” moment when they see the beginning of the next school year looming on the calendar.

I also think many parents are getting weary of the struggle and challenges of keeping their kids reading during the off-season. The reality is that the more we nag our kids to read, the more it feels like “school” to them so they are likely doing their share of pushback when the word “reading” comes up.

Let’s face it, after the crazy school year most kids have had, I can see why they are “over” anything that feels even slightly related to the rigidity of school.

In an effort to approach the act of reading as something fun they can do instead of something they have to do, a secret parenting-ninja-trick that works every time is to get your readers hooked on a series.

Books that have a common character (or characters) that reoccurs in multiple books are a great way to let the curiosity for “what comes next?” do the work for you. Here are some great series recommendations that I think you will like.

Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess By Deedee Cummings

Representation matters! The Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess is a brand-new diverse picture book series that shares heartwarming stories about family, role models, dreams, and discovering a determination for growth. This five-part series shines the spotlight on a little brown girl who loves musical theater and never lets anything get in the way of her dreams. Everyone else has an idea of who she should be, but in the end, she discovers that she is the one who gets to decide.

The Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess series is inspired by real-life budding Broadway Star, Kayla Pecchioni: a young Black woman who has always lived her life by believing in herself while letting nothing get in the way of her dreams.

Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess–Book One: In the very first book in this 5-part series, the reader is introduced to a feisty little brown girl who shares a very special bond with her mom; a hard-working woman who struggles with the guilt of not being as available for her young daughter as she would like. But as the story progresses, Kayla and her mom realize the impact of valuing the time they have together as well as the importance of seeing each other acknowledge (and pursue) their individual dreams. {ages 5 and up}. This book is available in paperback and Kindle ebook.

Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess–Dishes, Dancing, and Dreams: Released June 1, 2021, Book Two in the Kayla series introduces readers to her new best friend, Tommie. Is Tommie a boy? A girl? Does it matter? In this book, Kayla sees unfamiliar family dynamics through Tommie’s eyes and learns not to judge others along the way at the same time.
