Diverse Books That Celebrate Friendship

Did you know August has several national and international observances that share the theme of friendship? It does!

August 1st  is International Friendship Day. Friendship is one of the most important and valuable things in our life and I know we’d all agree that we would be lost without our pals and besties. To mark the importance of the most beautiful relationship in the world, Friendship Day is celebrated every year on the first Sunday of August. But The MCBD Team knows that our friends should be celebrated 365 days a year :)

In honor of friends, co-pilots, compadres, BFFs, and those who are not related by blood, but still family, here are some wonderful Diverse Books That Celebrate Friendship.

The Multicultural Children’s Book Day blog welcomed author Stephanie Campisi as part of one of our Children’s Book Council Book Jam and she was kind enough to share her eight favorite diverse picture books about belonging and friendship.

MCBD CoHost, Svenja from Colours of Us, always has amazing book picks and we especially love her 18 Multicultural Children’s Books about Friendship.

“One of the most important things we can teach our children is how to be a good friend. From making a friend at a new school to overcoming conflict in a friendship, from inter-generational friendships to friendships across racial divides – the picture books on this list show children what it takes to make a friend and what it means to be one.”~ Svenja Gernand

Leanna from All Done Monkey (who is also one of our veteran MCBD CoHosts!) has a wonderful list of books about friendship from all over the world. She and her husband, who is from Costa Rica, are raising their boys to be bilingual and bicultural but more importantly to be “world citizens.”  All Done Monkey is dedicated to sharing this journey with you! All Done Monkey focuses on multiculturalism, children’s education, natural parenting, and spiritual education.

Part of raising world citizens is teaching children to make friends with others who may seem different.  Below is a wonderful collection of books that teach kids about friendship around the world.  Some address the topic of diversity and friendship head-on, while others do so more indirectly.~ Leanna from All Done Monkey
