Native American Children’s Books for Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month! Established in 1990, it is a month of events and celebrations to pay tribute to the rich ancestry, traditions, and contributions of Native Americans.

It is more important than ever to teach our children about Native American culture and these wonderful books for all age groups are a great way to encourage important conversations and learning.

Svenja from Colours of Us always has amazing book recommendations and her booklist of 75+ Native American Children’s Books will not disappoint!

Mia Wenjen is known for her robust booklist and on-point perspectives. Her site Pragmaticmom is the motherload of amazing booklists that honor and support learning for Native American History Month:

“It comes up every year: what are the “good” books for Thanksgiving and Indigenous Peoples Day? It’s not simply a question of #OwnVoices but historical accuracy from multiple points of view. It’s much easier to celebrate a narrative that eliminates conflict and genocide. In searching for books over the few years, these are the books that I’ve found and can recommend,” ~Mia Wenjen.

Here are some of our favorite posts from her site on this topic:

Do kids think that Native Americans are only the past? This list will hopefully change that!
