Read Out Loud MAY I PET YOUR DOG with Stephanie Calmenson

What is the best way for kids to approach someone else's dog when in the park, out and about, or at a friend's house? Join Stephanie Calmenson for Read Out Loud as she shares her picture book, MAY I PET YOUR DOG?, a how-to guide for kids meeting dogs, beautifully illustrated by Jan Ormerod.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Children encounter dogs wherever they go: in the park, on the sidewalk, at their friends’ homes. Sometimes it’s love at first sight, on both sides—but not always. The right way for a child to approach a dog to ensure that the first connection is a complete success begins with this question to the owner: “May I pet your dog?” Using Harry the dachshund as a gentle guide, Stephanie Calmenson addresses this valuable yet overlooked topic with care and precision, and Jan Ormerod’s warm illustrations portray a wide variety of breeds and personalities and depict situations that are realistic but never scary. Unique and straightforward, this is the essential guide to bringing children and dogs together—for kids and parents alike.

ABOUT Stephanie Calmenson

Stephanie Calmenson grew up in Brooklyn, New York and never imagined becoming a writer someday. She began her professional life as an early childhood teacher, but when budget cuts left her looking for work, Calmenson became a children’s book editor and got to see how a book is made. I enrolled in a Master’s Program in Education at New York University where I took a course called, “Writing for Children.” My very first story was published in a children’s magazine. I was off and writing!

ABOUT Mutt-i-grees®

Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum uses the natural affinity between kids and pets to teach social-emotional learning (SEL) skills that are critical to academic success and a successful life. Where would be in our lives without empathy, self-confidence, teamwork, and ethical decision-making. What makes our program unique is its experiential component. Via humane education we connect students to the plight of shelter animals and the importance of rescue. The students take this journey and learn how shelter animals make wonderful companions, and that all of us — including kids — have the power to make a positive difference in our communities and in the lives of homeless animals.
