Q1: What inspired you to write ‘ABCs of Women in Medicine'?
I wanted to create a book that shows children that anyone can pursue a career in medicine, regardless of gender, race, or background. As a pediatrician and mother, I’ve seen firsthand how important representation is in inspiring young minds. I wanted to fill a gap in children’s literature by highlighting diverse women who have made significant contributions to medicine, so that every child can see themselves as a future healthcare hero.”
Q2: How does this book go beyond just teaching the alphabet?
ABCs of Women in Medicine' is more than just an ABC book. It’s a celebration of diversity in healthcare. Each letter represents a woman in medicine who has made a difference, showing kids that heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. The vibrant illustrations and engaging stories help children connect with these inspiring figures, making the learning experience both educational and empowering.
Q3: What do you hope children and families take away from this book?
I hope this book inspires children to dream big and realize that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Whether they want to be doctors, nurses, researchers, or any other role in healthcare, this book reminds them that the possibilities are endless. I also want families to see the importance of diversity and how it strengthens our world, especially in fields like medicine.
Q4: Can you share a bit about your journey as a debut children’s author?
It’s been an incredible journey! Writing ‘ABCs of Women in Medicine' allowed me to merge my love for healthcare with storytelling. As someone who faced challenges in my own medical career, it’s rewarding to create something that might make the path a little easier for the next generation. Outside of writing, I enjoy traveling, exploring new foods and cultures, and spending time with my family here in Los Angeles.

ABOUT Dr. Melissa Bent
Melissa Bent, MD is a Jamaican born, American raised physician specializing in pediatric orthopedics. With a career dedicated to empowering young lives, Dr. Bent is not only a medical practitioner but also a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in medicine.
Her journey began with a childhood dream of becoming a doctor, inspired by her own experiences as baby born with clubfeet. She earned her medical degree from Morehouse School of Medicine and completing her pediatric residency at the University of California, San Francisco and fellowship training in Non Operative Pediatric Orthopedics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
As the author of “ABCs of Women in Medicine,” Dr. Bent combines her expertise in medicine with her passion for storytelling to celebrate the achievements of women in the field. Through this book, she aims to inspire young readers to dream big, break barriers, and realize their full potential, regardless of gender or background.
She is a mother and lives in Los Angeles.
