Dr. Shafer's debut children's book The Boy and His Brightly Colored Blocks is out May 2025, and she can’t wait to share it with your community!
We can understand more every day about how our friends, family and colleagues with neurodivergence perceive the world, and how we can better support one another in our differences. The Boy and His Brightly Colored Blocks hopes to share the perspective of a young boy with PDA (pathological demand avoidance) so that kids and caregivers can increase awareness, acceptance and understanding and lead with love and connection.
This fun and heartwarming adventure captures the day in the life of a boy who loves playing with his brightly colored blocks but strongly dislikes transitions and demands placed on him by the outside world. The boy’s mother helps him learn to navigate tricky transitions and to face disappointment.
