When a young boy’s grandmother walks on, he wonders where she’s gone.
Did she go to the market to buy ripe melons? Or maybe she’s in the garden, watering her herbs?
It feels like she’s somewhere far away, so the boy finds news ways to share stories about his day, hoping she can hear him.
Even her house feels like it’s waiting for her return. Then as the boy approaches the kitchen, the scent and memories of her cooking assure him that no matter where she is, her love will always be close by.
Because when someone walks on, they stay with us. They grow in our hearts and guide us as we walk in their footsteps.
ABOUT Kevin Maillard
Kevin Maillard is Professor of Law at Syracuse University, a regular contributor to the New York Times and an author of children’s literature. He has written for The Atlantic and has provided on-air commentary to ABC News and MSNBC.
He is the author of Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story, a picture book illustrated by Juana Martinez-Neal, which won the Sibert Medal and the American Indian Youth Literature Honor, And They Walked On, and The Ones Who Came Before.
He serves on the boards of the Impact and Legacy Fund and the Institute for the Recruitment of Teachers at Phillips Academy. A fifth-generation enrolled member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, he is based in Manhattan, NY.
ABOUT Rafael López
Rafael López is an internationally recognized illustrator and artist. His illustrations bring diverse characters to children’s books and he is driven to produce and promote books that reflect and honor the lives of all young people. Born and raised in Mexico City to architect parents, López grew up surrounded by the visual richness, music, and surrealist traditions of Mexican culture, an influence that continues to shape his distinctive style and storytelling.
