Books for Family Literacy Week 2021: Let’s be Active!

Family Literacy Week 2021 will take place from January 24th to January 31st. Not only is this week a great excuse to load up on great books to read, but the theme for 2021 is also “Let’s Be Active.” It’s the perfect opportunity to combine books and movement to focus on the lifelong and life-wide benefits of being active.

With that in mind, here are some wonderful diverse books that have topics that will encourage Littles and Bigs to get up off the couch, learn about an inspiring person from our past and present, and even try something new. Enjoy!

Multicultural Children’s Book Day co-founder, Mia Wenjen, was inspired to create this OWNVoices booklist after reading the Track series by Jason Reynolds followed by Lila Quintero Weaver’s excellent middle-grade book, My Year in the Middle.
Here’s another great diverse book roundup from Mia with a soccer theme.

Exercise and movement don’t always have to be intense. Yoga teacher and author, Monetta Wilson, shared in her MCBD guest post that the ancient practice of yoga has a variety of physical, emotional, and psychological benefits for adults and kids alike. It can build strength and flexibility, promote mind-body connection, and relieve stress and anxiety. All over the world yoga is being recognized for the many benefits it can provide. The calming moves included in a yoga routine is especially helpful for anxious kids.
If this sounds like something your family or classroom would like to try, check out the books and resources from Giselle Shardlow at Kids Yoga Stories.
Keep calm and Read On!
