Diverse Kidlit that Celebrates Pride Month

Happy Pride Month!

It’s been over five decades since the Stonewall Riots took place in 1969 and the birth of the LGBTQIA movement began. Every year, during the month of June, the LGBT community celebrates in a number of different ways. Across the globe, various events are held during this special month as a way of recognizing the influence LGBTQIA people have had around the world.

As well as being a month-long celebration, Pride month is also an opportunity to peacefully protest and raise political awareness of current issues facing the community. It’s also an excellent time to encourage conversations, understanding, and empathy. We know that not everyone in the US is accepting of LGBTQIA adults and that their rights are constantly under attack. That’s why there is such a need for books that create a safe place and a respectful dialogue for all LGBTQIA youth and adults.

Mia at Pragmatic Mom also has a list of 10 Groundbreaking LGBTQ Children’s Books on her site here. AND, she also has some great titles on her Favorite Children’s Books Featuring an LGBTQ Character(s) post here.

We also love this article by Afsaneh Moradian (author of  Jamie is Jamie: A Book About Being Yourself) about how we can all support Nonbinary and Transgender Children.

Afsaneh also wrote an excellent guest post for MCBD about The visibility of LGBTQIA folks HERE.

“Over the past few years, young people have taken discussions about gender in a whole new direction — declaring themselves gender neutral, gender non-conforming, non-binary, gender fluid, and transgender.” Read the article in its entirety here.

Keep Calm and Read On!
